SCARCE archive of 18 pieces related to the now defunct Southern Baptist Brotherhood Commission. Although similar programs for boys existed, the first organized effort to enlist and retain young boys in the Baptist faith was the Brotherhood Commission of 1965. This commission within the church sought to attract boys ages 9 to 17 with the purpose of doing some meaningful work along the lines of the Boy Scouts of America. The difference being of course that while the Boy Scouts recognized God, they did not endeavor to support any religion in particular nor did members actively seek out new members for any single Church. The Brotherhood of the Southern Baptist Convention sought to reach boys in the hopes of driving church membership. Members were seen as workers for the Church... The activities included supporting the church, daily Bible reading, recruiting boys without fathers, planning revivals, helping the church raise funds, reaching out to grieving folks in your community and so on. Prior to the demise of this group they were also put in charge of disaster relief efforts in their respective communities.
