Sigurd Olson (1899–1982) was an American author, environmentalist, and advocate for wilderness preservation whose lyrical writing and passionate activism helped shape modern environmental thought. Born in northern Wisconsin, Olson developed an early love for the outdoors that led him to the canoe country of northern Minnesota and Ontario—a landscape that would become central to his life and work.

Trained as a biologist, Olson spent much of his career as a teacher and wilderness guide, but it was his gift for writing that brought him national attention. His first book, The Singing Wilderness (1956), captured the spiritual essence of wild places and launched a series of beloved nature writings. With a voice both poetic and grounded in deep ecological knowledge, Olson helped Americans see wilderness not just as scenery, but as a vital part of the human spirit.

A key figure in the creation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and an advisor to the National Park Service, Olson played a significant role in conservation policy. His legacy endures through his books, such as Listening Point and Reflections from the North Country, and in the protected landscapes he fought for—wild places that still speak in his voice.
