Two-Page TLS Signed by Vaudeville & Radio Star Malcolm "Spareribs" Claire

Chicago: Original Typed Letter, 1935. Very Good. Item #8911

Two-page typed letter with original NBC Chicago cover envelope. Dated March 5, 1935 and signed at close by Claire. A blanket TLS response from Claire to one his adoring fans, of which he had many. His "Spareribs" children's show was wildly popular in the 1930's.

Malcolm "Spareribs" Claire was Vaudeville actor and radio performer in the early decades of American broadcast, best known for his role as “Spareribs” — a character through which he told fairy-tales and children’s stories in a stylized Southern/dialect voice. His act cannot be divorced from its era: early on, his show involved blackface and minstrel conventions (he sometimes performed as “Spareribs the Redcap” or “Whitewash”), underscoring how early American radio often drew on racist stereotypes as part of popular entertainment.
