Early Chicago friends Yvor Winters, John Gaw Meem, Monroe Wheeler, and Glenway Wescott form an unexpected constellation of American cultural influence—Winters, the stern poet-critic whose exacting standards shaped generations of writers; Meem, the architect who reimagined the Southwest through his lyrical Pueblo Revival designs; Wheeler, the quietly commanding curator who helped define modern taste at MoMA; and Wescott, the novelist whose elegant, emotionally charged prose captured the subtleties of human longing. Though their fields differed, all four shared a devotion to craft, clarity, and a belief that art—whether in words, buildings, exhibitions, or stories—could refine the way people see the world.
