New York: Street & Smith Publishers, 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. 4 7/8 X 7 1/4 Inches. 238 PP. Very Good. Item #8575
Doc Savage, the man of bronze, was raised from childhood by a team of scientists to become the original "super" hero of the 1930s. A man of great mental and physical strength, he went around the world battling larger-than-life villains!
First printing of this early book of stories by Savage, the man whom publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic would use as the basis for DOC SAVAGE in the 1930's. Major Richard Henry Savage was an American military officer who penned nearly 40 books mostly based upon his own adventures. Savage notably traveled through America, built a military base in Havana, Cuba, worked on the railroad in Texas, served a stint in the Egyptian army and survived a terrible fever he contracted in Honduras. His personal exploits were most certainly ripe for fiction... and apparently Henry Ralston of Street & Smith used them for this purpose! Original decorated cloth binding. Light soiling to covers, else a mostly fine copy. BASIS FOR THE 1970'S FILM STARRING ARNOLD SSCHWARZENEGGER and the upcoming remake that will put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the role.
