The Testimony of an Escaped Novice from the Sisterhood of St. Joseph, Emmettsburg, Maryland...

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1855. First Edition. Hardcover. 5 1/4 X 7 7/8 Inches. 338 + 10 PP Catalog. Very Good. Item #7932

First printing in the original decorated cloth binding. Important 1850's expose of life in the Roman Catholic Church, which led to several attempts to have the book suppressed. Bunkley was born in Norfolk, Virginia and educated at a convent in Maryland. It wasn't until her entry to life as a novitiate that she felt persecuted. After her escape she married at least twice (Doctor Andrew and James Major) and attempted her luck at a career on the stage. An important book that reveals both the terror of life in a convent as well as the anti-Catholic sentiment of the mid-19th Century in America. Foxing and toning throughout.
