Bunkley was born in Norfolk, Virginia and educated at a convent in Maryland. It wasn't until her entry to life as a novitiate that she felt persecuted. After her escape she married at least twice (Doctor Andrew and James Major) and attempted her luck at a career on the stage. An important book that reveals both the terror of life in a convent as well as the anti-Catholic sentiment of the mid-19th Century in America. Foxing and toning throughout.
