First thus edition - the first printing of the "Author's Edition" with added text up to 1883. Original black cloth with gilt title stamping to spine. Front and rear cover embossed in blind. Tissue-guard intact. Preface bears the 1883 date. Contains the full-page publishing history and details of this "cheaper edition" by Barnum (dated 1883). Slight foxing and toning. A bit of wear to page edges and corners. Binding is clean and tight, albeit a bit scuffed. A very appealing copy of Barnum's classic autobiography.
In typical Barnum fashion, his original Struggles and Triumphs was added to and reissued over the course of a decade or so. Continually changing the text and adding material at the end allowed Barnum to offer a slightly "newer" edition of the book at several different times.
