Alcoa, TN; et all. 1924-1934. First Edition, First Printing. 16 Published Magazines - 2 Original Hand-Drawn Magazines + 2 Handwritten Lone Scout / Dixie Guard Log Books. Very Good. Item #2668

A unique collection of early Southern Scouting magazines and holographic material. A nice assemblage of items from a few early 20th Century organizations that would eventually be combined with the Boy Scouts of America and/or cease to exist because of the Boy Scouts of America. Just the Lone Scouts material in this archive shed light on the co-mingling of activities and badges between them and the BSA. While it is understood that Lone Scouting folded into the Boy Scouts in 1924, this archive shows that the individual identity of both could easily be seen a decade later.

The Volunteer Scout issues state "Published on the 10th of the month in the interest of the Lone Scout Division, Boy Scouts of America." Each of these amateur journalistic efforts include the usual news and updates, but also contain valuable early scouting tid-bits and want ads. The common denominator in this collection is the involvement of either J. Harry Hawkins (Southern Deputy Director of the Lone Indians) or J. Wilburn Lane (Chief of the Dixie Guards). Hawkins and Lane were also part of the publication efforts of most of these early scouting magazines. The two HAND-DRAWN working copies of The Tennessee Scout and The Cherokee Brave both feature original cover illustration artwork by J. Harry Hawkins.

Along with the collection of 16 publications, the archive contains two original logs from the collection of J. Wilburn Lane. The first is the Scouting diary of J. Wilburn Lane. Lane served as the 1931 Chairman for the W. Tennessee BSA Rally, Chairman of the publicity committee, Chairman of the Arrangement Committee for the Region 5 Lone Scout Rally, Editor of the Region Five Lone Scout Yearbook and co-editor of Tennesseee Scout in 1931 among many other posts he recorded. The log contains a record of Lane's Scouting badges and achievements and a record of "Lone Scouts I've Met & Known". He records "Scout Officials I've Met & Known" and first-hand accounts of the 1933 Regional Lone Scout Rally in Shiloh, TN and scouts he met while attending College at Union University. The diary also contains several pages of records of the Lone Star Tribe activities in Greenfield, TN. The entire journal is 114 pages long.

The second is the 1928 handwritten log of "The Dixie Guards." The Dixie Guards were affiliated with the Southern Agriculturist Magazine. Lane served as Chief of the Dixie Guards of Camp Gordon. Over 20 pages of handwritten notes, etc...

Foxing and wear to edges of a few of the magazines. The handwritten diaries show evidence of extensive use, but are tightly bound and mostly clean nonetheless.

Price: $750.00
