Washington DC: Original Typed Letter, 1979. Original Letter. Single Sheet. 8 X 10 1/2 Inches. Very Good. Item #2240

Original Typed Letter Signed (TLS) from Senator and Presidential hopeful Howard Baker to a Mr. Bronx Sledge of Macon, MS. Dated May 3, 1979. In part: "With respect to the 1980 Presidential election, I am flattered by your expression of encouragement and support. While I do intend to be a candidate next year, I have not formally announced my candidacy as yet. I have, however, set up a committee with the FEC to receive contributions and finance the travel which I am undertaking to "test the waters" for a Presidential race in the next few months."

On Official United States Senate letterhead. Boldly signed by Baker at the conclusion. In the end, Baker, well known for his involvement in the Watergate investigation, did run for President in 1980. He went on to withdraw from the race after losing to Bush and to Reagan in the primaries. It was suspected that he would be chosen as the VP canididate under Reagan, but Bush was eventually selected instead. A nice piece from the great election of 1980! Light toning and hint of wear to edges.
