Senator George Smathers was the United States Senator from Florida 1951 to 1969. Senator Smathers and Dr. J.A. Rupert were friends and political allies. Smathers (AKA "Gorgeous George") was a noted friend of John F. Kennedy and served as an usher in John and Jackie Kennedy's wedding. Smathers was noted alumni of the University of Florida and is the namesake of the main campus library (The George A. Smathers Libraries).
