1881 William Wallace Eaton (CT) Congressional Campaign Flyer
1882. First Edition, First Printing. Original wraps. 5 3/4 X 8 7/8 Inches. 8 PP. Very Good. Item #9036
Original 1882 campaign flyer for William Wallace Eaton, Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives from Connecticut. While this eight page political history of Eaton was issued in support of his views and his cause, what is left to history is a record of his complicity in racist policies and overall dismissal of slavery.
William Wallace Eaton, best known as a sharp-penned New England editor, viewed the Civil War less as a clash of armies and more as a moral stress test for the American republic. From his perspective, the conflict exposed how fragile democratic institutions could be when sectional loyalty overpowered national responsibility. He was a staunch Unionist and spoke near constant opposition to the war from 1861 to 1865. His speeches reflect a man who favored the preservation of slavery over the horrors of what war would bring to North America. He was a noted Jeffersonian Democrat and vowed to preserve his state of Connecticut above all else, including any supposed union of states. As with the majority of Congress members of his day, his views on race are expressly racist in modern terms. He maintained that negro Americans should not have the right vote. He never publicly supported policies like Black suffrage, land redistribution to freedpeople, or full civil equality.
