London: Tylston and Edwards, 1893. First Thus. Cloth. 6 X 8 5/8 Inches. Very Good. Item #7193
Includes: Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Meccah (2 Vol); A Mission to Gelele, King of Dahome (2 Vol); Vikram and the Vampire; and First Footsteps in East Africa (2 Vol). Each of the volumes bound in original black cloth with gilt decoratio to front board and spine. Light wear to edges and a hint of rubbing at spine ends. Bindings are complete and intact, but tender as you might assume. It is very common with this set (and similar bindings of the time actually). Burton was a noted British explorer, famous for his exploits in America and Asia as well as his clandestine mission to Mecca at a time when only Muslims were allowed to visit the city.
