Byrd was a highly competitive explorer in the early 20th century, nearly becoming the first man to make the trans-atlantic flight to France. He was beaten by Lindbergh by only two months. Byrd is a noted explorer of Antarctica and claimed to be the first man to reach the north and the south poles.
