New York: The American Anti-Slavery Society, 1835. First Edition, First Printing. Original wraps. 4 3/8 X 7 Inches. 12 PP. Good. Item #625
Stated "First Edition" in the original illustrated blue paper wraps. Cover illustration of white slaveholder whipping young negro children. Includes the story, "The Desperation of a Mother" in which a negro slave kills her two children after they are all sold and are to be separated from her care.
An early, important publication in the abolitionist movement in America in the first half of 19th century. The magazine, which had a publication run of three years, depicted the horrors of slavery through illustrations as well as text. This particular copy retains the two original woodcuts, one of which being the cover illustration. A bit of wear to corners and foxing througout. Original tie-binding intact, but front cover is nearly separated. An appealing copy overall.
