First printing copy in original dust jacket. Original price of $3.75 intact on front flap. "Protestant Council of the City of New York" stamps to front and rear endpaper. Jacket art by ARNO. Story of a young Jewish boy, Saal Cramer, growing up in NYC in the early 20th century. Ornitz was famously one of the "Hollywood Ten" after his appearance before Congress during the 1940's Un-American Activities hearings. He and nine others (including Dalton Trumbo) were blacklisted by Hollywood and sentenced to jail time for their affiliation (?) with the communist party.
