Full calf with red title label to spine. Binding lightly rubbed and foxing throughout. Previous owner bookplate of "James C. Bruce", owner of Berry Hill Plantation in Halifax County, Virginia. Bruce was the largest slaveholder in Virginia, circa 1830. Berry Hill is one of the most important antebellum Greek revival homes in America. Volume one of two volumes.
