First edition of this monumental work by James Callender, well-known anti-federalist journalist who broke the story of the Alexander Hamilton / Maria Reynolds affair in this publication. He would later be convicted of under the Alien & Sedition acts for which he served nine months in prison. With the release of what is now believed to be Washington's first sex scandal, Callender closed the door on Hamilton's future prospects in Government. After the release of this book, Hamilton became known as a "scandalmonger" and never again held public office.

Beautiflly rebound in the style of the original in 3/4 leather with red leather spine label. Marbleized boards with gilt ruling and stamping to spine. Foxing and toning throughout. Deckled edges with a few light tears and some paper loss to page 281 at bottom. New endpapers. Pencil to title-page as shown. A very handsome copy of this incredibly important work.
