Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1809. Early Edition. Hardcover. 4 1/4 X 6 3/4 Inches. 228 PP. Fair. Item #3535
Stated "Ninth Edition" on the title-page. Earlier printings are seldom seen. The fifth edition printed in the same year is the origin of the "I cannot tell a lie, I did it with my little hatchet" cherry tree chopping story. Text is complete, but there are a few issues (as is typical) with the illustrations. Frontispiece is complete / illustration at page 40 chipped at top corner / illustration at page 70 chipped at edge / illustration at page 76 is complete / illustration at page 104 removed / illustration at page 114 trimmed a bit (looks like this was how it was issued).
Scattered foxing and toning throughout. A few pages stained a bit. Period PO name on rear endpaper. Original boards intact, but colmpletely covered in a period stitched leather covering. A lower grade copy of a scarce and important early book intended to reinforce the public awareness of the greatness and morality of our first President.
