New York: William Morrow and Company, 1936. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. 8 1/2 X 11 5/8 Inches. 97 PP. Very Good. Item #3003
All 30 watercolor paintings by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith intact. Signed by artist directly on the Table of Contents page (as was her fashion for this title). Additional Christmas inscription in pencil on the FFEP that is potentially in her hand (although unknown). The inscription could be easily erased, but we have chosen to leave as it might be in hand of Smith. This book from the leading artist of the Charleston Renaissance is in stunning condition overall. Original beige boards are very clean with the slightest bit of soiling to front cover. A bit of scuffing to front pastedown (looks like a plate was removed). A very respectable copy overall. SCARCE!
The work of Smith has seen quite an increase in interest over the years, with one of her paintings being featured on the Antiques Roadshow a few years back (appraised for over $80K if I remember correctly). Book contains a narrative about the Rice Coast by Herbert Ravenel Sass with chapters about growing up on a rice plantation from the unpublished memoirs of Daniel Elliott Huger Smith.
